Many Scottish and Irish families emigrated to America in the 1800s and moved west to find land. In 1849, men discovered gold in California and very quickly the small town of San Francisco turned into a city of 25000 people, mostly gold-miners called "Forty-niners" .

American country music is very similar to Scottish and Irish music and the songs often tell a story.

First verse

In a cavern, in a canyon,

Excavating for a mine,

Lived a miner, forty-niner,

And his daughter Clementine.

Chorus

Oh my darling! Oh my darling!

Oh my darling Clementine!

You are lost and gone for ever!

Very sorry, Clementine!

Second verse

She drove ducklings to the water,

Every morning, just at nine.

She hit her foot against a splinter,

And fell into the foaming brine.

Third verse

I saw her lips above the water,

And the bubbles mighty fine.

But alas! I was no swimmer,

So I lost my Clementine.

Fourth verse

How I missed her, how I missed her,

How I missed Clementine!

But I kissed her little sister

And forgot my Clementine!

This one is for the sound but also for pleasure, let's watch it!
